In 2022, contract awards in this category peaked at $3.5 billion—a substantial increase from $2.9 billion in 2021—as firms faced acute talent shortages and pent-up demand following the reopening of the economy.

However, as economic headwinds emerged toward the end of 2022, federal spending in this area began to decline, dropping to $2.3 billion in 2023 and further to $1.7 billion in 2024. This marks a significant contraction in government investment in IT services.
