The narrative surrounding recruitment challenges in Canada has officially shifted. According to the newly released 2026 Hiring Outlook from Express Employment Professionals, the primary obstacle for employers is no longer wage escalation, but a pronounced deficit in hard skills and relevant experience.
Nearly half of Canadian hiring decision-makers now identify a lack of relevant experience and missing technical skills as their greatest barriers to filling open roles. In a notable reversal from the post-pandemic years, compensation-related concerns are fading. Employer complaints regarding uncompetitive pay and a reluctance among candidates to work required hours have dropped significantly since early 2025. This data confirms that the structural skills gap has fully eclipsed wage demands as the critical bottleneck in the domestic labour market.
